Midtown Plaza, opened in 1962, was America’s first downtown indoor shopping mall, a $30 million project in the heart of Rochester with 50 shops, sidewalk cafés, and the Clock of the Nations, a 28-foot musical clock whose hourly puppet shows made "meet me under the clock" a local catchphrase.
A Mold-A-Rama machine stood in the center of the mall near the clock, vending a souvenir of the Clock of the Nations from 1963. The mall was demolished in 2008; the clock now stands at Rochester’s airport.
